Senate intern shot after returning home from Washington DC

RIVERDALE, Ill. (AP) – A suburban Chicago college student is recovering from a gunshot wound suffered shortly after he returned home from an internship on Capitol Hill.

DeQuawn Bruce of Riverdale says he was in his uncle’s backyard on Aug. 10 when he became a victim of gun violence. Bruce says he heard a loud bang but no pain. However, when he got inside the house he had to lay on the floor.

The bullet hit his pelvis, somehow avoiding any major organs.

Bruce says he had been home just 10 days, and was still feeling good about his summer internship working for South Carolina Senator Tim Scott.

When the Carthage College graduate student was released from the hospital, he was met at his family’s home by Scott.

The 23-year-old Bruce says he is determined not let the shooting keep him from his ultimate goals, which includes working in Congress after getting a graduate degree.
