Paul L. Johnson Jr., 72 of Abingdon, passed away at 12:08 p.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.He was born July 10, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Paul L. and Dovie Jean (Sharp) Johnson, Sr. He married Deborah Harding Akers on August 3, 2002 in Abingdon.
Paul is survived by his wife Deborah; his children, Tyson (and Devon) Johnson of Galesburg, Derek Johnson of Galva, Brandon (and Sara Miklavcic) Johnson of Cambridge, and Laura Clark of Columbia, Tennessee; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two step-daughters, Carri Harding and Kaysi Akers both of Galesburg; seven step-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Dewayne Johnson of Abingdon and Danny (and LaDawn) Johnson of Abingdon; two sisters, Carol Sue (and Billie) Stone of Burlington, Iowa and Cherie Swan of Burlington, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Shirley Simpson and two brothers-in-law, Brent Swan and Terry Simpson.
Paul lived in Abingdon most of his life. He attended Abingdon schools. He retired from Mediacom in November of 2012 after 31 years of service. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, woodworking and playing pool in pool leagues in Monmouth and Galva. He also enjoyed his daily walks in Abingdon after he retired.
Cremation will be accorded. To celebrate his life, the family will receive relatives and friends from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Abingdon American Legion. Private committal of his ashes will be in his monument at the Abingdon Cemetery. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
