CHICAGO RIDGE, Ill. (AP) – A suburban Chicago man is charged with driving under the influence resulting in death in a hit-and-run that left a 15-year-old high school freshman dead.
Edward Cruz of Oak Lawn also was charged Tuesday with hit and run and several traffic violations.
Authorities say 15-year-old freshman Amira Nairat was walking along a street in Chicago Ridge when she was struck Monday. The incident occurred near Richards High School in Oak Lawn.
Oak Lawn police say Cruz’s vehicle was involved in two other hit-and-run accidents in the village before hitting the girl.
Police said the vehicle struck the girl and moved on before being stopped by police several blocks from the scene. They also noted Cruz has a prior charge for driving under the influence.
It wasn’t immediately known if Cruz has an attorney.
