CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man charged in the deaths of two people during a weekend attempted carjacking has been ordered held without bond Tuesday by a Cook County judge.
Alvin Thomas is charged with two-counts of first-degree murder in the deaths early Sunday of 36-year-old Huayi Bian and 35-year-old Weizhong Xiong.
Prosecutors told Judge Arther Wesley Willis that Bian and Xiong were shot in the face when they resisted the 20-year-old Thomas, who approached them as they parked an SUV. Both died at the scene.
Xiong’s wife was unhurt after she acceded to Thomas’ demand. Police called to the scene by the woman followed bloody footprints that led to Thomas, who was still in the area. He was arrested after a short chase and a gun recovered.
Thomas was on probation at the time of the shooting after pleading guilty to a 2018 robbery, according to court records. He received credit for 319 days served in Cook County Jail. While free on $5,000 bond in the armed robbery case, Thomas was charged in February 2019 with the manufacture and delivery of cannabis, but the charges were dropped.
It wasn’t immediately known if Thomas has legal representation.
