John H. Jackson, 82 of Abingdon, passed away at 9:08 a.m. Thursday, September 17, 2020, at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

He was born on February 9, 1938, in Chestline, Illinois, the son of Leon H. and Zelma D. (Kendrick) Jackson. He married Iva Jane Johnson on May 23, 1955, in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. She preceded him in death on August 11, 2020

John is survived by his children, Joni Carlson, Julie Nelson, Mary Jane (and Gary, Sr.) Clayton and John Randy Jackson, all of Abingdon; 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren, and 9 step-great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, George Jackson of Galesburg, Richard (and Linda) Jackson of East Galesburg, Kenneth (and Sue) Jackson of Florida, and Terry (and Lorma) Jackson of Rio; three sisters, Patricia Bishop of Monmouth, Maybell Ostrander of Petersburg, and Doris Swise of Fairview; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

He was also preceded in death by his father, Leon Jackson, his mother and stepfather, Zelma and Raymond Ashby, one son-in-law, Joseph Carlson, one grandson, Justin Carlson, two brothers, Wayne Jackson and Bobby Joe Jackson, and two sisters, Betty Chase and Janet Kay Johnson.

John had lived in the Abingdon area most of his adult life. He worked “forever” as a mechanic. He also worked at the former Galesburg Malleable/Iowa Malleable Factory in Galesburg for 45 years. He was of the Methodist faith. His hobbies included fishing, camping, gardening, and working on cars. He loved his family and is now together again with his love, Iva Jane Jackson.

Graveside service for John and Iva Jane will be 10 a.m. Friday, September 25, 2020, at the Fiatt Cemetery in Fiatt, Illinois. Family and friends are also invited to continue to celebrate John’s life from noon to…? Friday at the family home, 110 W. Jackson St. in Abingdon. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
