Just after 1:00 am on Wednesday, April 7th, Galesburg Police conducted a traffic stop on a U-Haul truck without taillights in the 1000 block of Monroe Street. The driver was identified as 33-year old Charity Johnson of Galesburg. Hours earlier, GPD responded to a car theft call made by Johnson at her home – but when officers arrived and told her the car was parked in front of her house, Johnson told officers she had been drinking and appeared embarrassed according to police reports. During the traffic stop, Johnson was unable to turn the taillights of the U-Haul on without officers’ assistance. Given the earlier call and the alcoholic odor coming from Johnson, she was asked to perform a field sobriety test which she failed. She provided a breath sample that came back with a BAC of .116. Johnson was placed under arrest and charged with DUI Alcohol and DUI with a BAC over .08.
