Galesburg High School Principal Jeff Houston is returning to his former position as Director of the Galesburg Area Vocational Center.
The 205 School Board approved Houston’s hiring in this role at their Monday meeting.
A native of Knoxville, Houston has been Galesburg High’s top administrator for 5 years.
Part of a district budget reduction process in 2016 included eliminating one administrator at the high school by combining the GHS principal’s duties with those of the GAVC Director. Then-Principal Roy Van Meter was already resigning and Houston took up both jobs.
But Superintendent John Asplund says they “feel the District’s investment in the GAVC facility needs a full-time director for the near future to be able to recruit students from all over the region.”
Ralph Grimm was Superintendent at the time of those reductions, and the only remaining board member from that period is Tianna Cervantez.
Asplund adds, “The District is thrilled to have someone as passionate about vocational education as Jeff Houston.”
Houston has been with the school district for over 22 years and was one time Head Boys Basketball coach.
District Communications Specialist Amy Pickrel says the GHS principal job will be posted soon.
