Mrs. Eda “Marlene” Nelson, 84, of Galesburg, Illinois passed away at 7:08 pm Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at Seminary Manor Nursing Home.
Marlene was born August 26, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Carl and Eda (Johnson) Nelson. She married Dean A. Nelson on July 9, 1955, in Chicago. He preceded her in death on December 14, 2017.
Marlene is survived by her son, Bruce Nelson of Galesburg; her three daughters, Sherry (Andrew Wright) Nelson of Raleigh, North Carolina, Lori (Jeff Jelinek) Greer of Portage, Wisconsin, and Penny (David) Cepiel of San Antonio, Texas; her brother, Carl (Leona) Nelson of Mt. Morris, Illinois; five grandchildren, David Wright, Alexandra (Michael) Cary, Chelsea Cepiel, Brandon Cepiel, and Lauren White. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Wendell and Frankie Nelson, and her sister, Lorraine Rabette
Marlene graduated from Nicholas Senn High School in Chicago in 1955, married the love of her life, Dean, and moved to Galesburg in 1956. Marlene worked for Woolworth and Kresge and Kline’s Department Store. She later worked for District 205 as a cafeteria aide.
Marlene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was involved with the Church Circle and a member and past president of the Church Women United. Marlene was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Ladies Auxiliary #205, receiving a 25-year service award. She was a member of the 8-40 Club and the Galesburg Woman’s Club. Marlene volunteered for Cottage Corner and Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Marlene enjoyed a good book and going to the movies.
Memorial Services are scheduled for 11:30 am Sunday, May 30, 2021, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Carrie Carnes officiating. Cremation will be accorded. Burial will be held at a later date in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
