The Galesburg Fire Department has named their Firefighter of the Year.
GFD firefighter Kyle Harms received the award, recognizing the significant contributions, achievements, character, and long-term dedication.
In a Wednesday release, Battalion Chief Derek Perry said that it was an “easy choice even among stiff competition” in naming Harms as the firefighter of the year. “Kyle has stepped up and worked tirelessly on important departmental projects which include: the business self-inspection program, replacement of the aging Galesburg Regional Fire Training Site Tower, and a much needed remodel of the central station dormitory to improve firefighter health and comfort and ready it for female firefighters.”
“His commitment to the job and exemplary performance have brought great honor to the Galesburg Fire Department and we are proud to recognize him as Firefighter of the Year,” as stated in the announcement.
Harms was also involved in two rescues, the first as acting Captain during a structure fire, rescuing a 23-year-old woman and her dog. He was also involved in rescuing a 66-year-old man who had fallen through ice approximately 75 yards offshore of Lake Storey.
Selection is based on the candidate’s skill and ability as a firefighter, performance of duties in the station, motivation, teamwork, leadership, creativity, professionalism, and customer service. The example set by the nominee off-duty, such as volunteering and community service, may also be considered.
Nominees are chosen by the firefighting shifts and the final selection is made by consensus of the management staff, union president, and staff captain.
Harms has been with the fire department for nine years. He received his Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from John Wood Community College and his Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from Western Illinois University.
He also has his Fire Officer I certification and has been taking classes in Fire Prevention, making him an even better asset to the department, according to the release.
