Two men attempt to burglarize store, caught while fleeing

Galesburg and Knox County officers arrested two men early Thursday who attempted to burglarize the AT&T Store on Knox Square Drive.

Just after midnight, GPD and Knox County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the store for a burglary alarm.

Police found damage to a rear door, but no entry was gained.

Then at 1:30 a.m. the same night, officers responded to the AT&T store again for a second alarm.

A Sheriff’s Deputy noticed a vehicle fleeing from the business and a subject fleeing on foot from the same area.

Deputies pursued the fleeing vehicle north on Seminary St. and then east on Route 34 before the vehicle crashed in the 2200 block of Route 34. 

The vehicle’s driver, later identified as 27-year-old Byron A. Williams,  attempted to get away on foot but was apprehended by officers.

A Galesburg Police K9 was able to track down the man who fled from the store on foot, identified as 27-year-old Jameel G. Hughes. 

Both Williams and Hughes are facing charges of theft, burglary, and criminal damage to property.

Williams additional is facing charges of Aggravated Battery of a Peace Officer, Aggravated Reckless Driving, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding along with various other traffic-related charges.
