A 42-year-old Galva man will be heading back to prison after being handed a 15-year sentence this week on charges of possessing meth with intent to distribute.
U.S. District Judge Joe Billy McDade recommended that Justin W. Collins also receive drug treatment during his stay with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Collins was indicted in October and pleaded guilty back in December of 2021.
His arrest stems from a free air sniff that a police K9 conducted at the Kewanee Walmart in June 2020.
When the dog alerted to Collins’ truck, officers had reason to search the vehicle and found over 80 grams of potent meth inside a black glove hidden in the engine compartment.
Federal prosecutors also say they produced evidence that Collins intended to distribute.
The statutory minimum for Collins’ crime is 10 years to life in prison, and not less than 10 years supervised release.
Collins will have a decade of supervised release but was also given a 30-month concurrent sentence for violating his last terms of supervised release.
