Travelers between Monmouth and Galesburg on U.S. Highway 34 might be hitting some construction later this month.
According to a release from the Illinois Department of Transportation, the portion of 34 between Main Street and Henderson Street will go under construction starting Monday, June 13, for pavement repairs.
The work will require overnight lane closures and is expected to be completed by the end of the month. Motorists can expect intermittent daytime lane closures for patching on the westbound lanes.
IDOT says that motorists should expect delays when traveling through the area and should allow for extra time on trips. They add that the use of alternate routes should be considered, to avoid the work area.
Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changing conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,500 miles of highway and 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation.
Accomplishments through Year Two included approximately $5.2 billion of improvements statewide on 3,020 miles of highway, 270 bridges, and 428 additional safety improvements.
