One person is dead and another received life-threatening injuries following a two-vehicle crash in Monmouth.

The accident occurred Monday afternoon at around 3:12 at the intersection of U.S. 34 and North 6th Street.

According to the Illinois State Police, a 2015 Jeep Wrangler driven by 55-year-old Shawn P. Runge of Morris, Illinois, failed to stop at a stop light for unknown reasons and struck the passenger side of a 2013 Brown Honda CRV, driven by 80-year-old Joy R. Stephens of Monmouth.

The press release indicates that Stephens was turning north onto 6th street when Runge’s vehicle struck hers.

Joy’s passenger, 91-year-old Jack K. Stephens, also of Monmouth, was killed in the accident and pronounced dead on the scene by the Warren County Coroner. Joy was flown from the scene with life-threatening injuries.

Runge was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and cited for disobeying a traffic control device.
