The City of Galesburg plans on applying for a state grant that would fund a major renovation of Lancaster Park.

Lancaster Park is about 1 acre and sits at the corner of Lancaster St. and Bushmore Ave. in a neighborhood just off Monmouth Blvd. to the south.

The project would include new playground equipment, a picnic shelter, half court basketball area, benches, pathways for accessibility, and parking areas.

The grant is the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development, or OSLAD Grant that’s run through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

OSLAD is a state-finance program allowing up to a $600,000 award for a renovation project, providing up to 50% funding to develop public outdoor recreation areas.

But if the city’s approved for the grant, local taxpayers would be paying $350,000 for the remaining project costs.

The Galesburg City Council first has to authorize applying for the grant at their meeting Monday.

Lancaster Park and its improvements have the support of a neighborhood group that meets on a regular basis and provided input to the city.
