Owner of senior facility where 3 died during heat wave fined

CHICAGO (AP) – The owner of a senior housing facility on Chicago’s North Side where three women died amid a brief May heat wave has been fined $1,500 by the city’s buildings department. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the city’s building department fined the Hispanic Housing Development Corporation after an inspection revealed 11 code violations – two of which were the result of a rooftop air conditioning “chiller” that was unsuitable for use on the exterior of the building. The department said the issues noted in the inspection were later addressed. However, the fine was levied before city officials had seen autopsy reports that showed the heat in the building was the primary cause of death for the three women.
