Galesburg Rescue Mission exceeds Sharathon goal, provides update on relocation

The 39th annual Harvest Time Sharathon was a success.

Darrell Grimm, interim director of the Galesburg Rescue Mission & Women’s Shelter, reports $51,365 in donations were pledged during Saturday’s event hosted by WGIL Radio.

Grimm tells WGIL, “Our goal was $50,000, so we’re thrilled to exceed our goal.”

There were 183 pledges made Saturday, and $26,775 has been collected. Grimm said money raised from the Sharathon goes to the general budget, which funds utilities, salaries and many other expenses of the facility at 435 E. Third St.

The Galesburg Rescue Mission & Women’s Shelter helps men, women and children in need of shelter, food, clothing, and other needs.

The former Nielson School, 547 N. Farnham St., is the future home of the Galesburg Rescue Mission & Women’s Shelter.

The Rescue Mission is in the process of attempting to move its operations to the former Nielson Elementary School at 547 N. Farnham St. They purchased the building from District 205 in April of this year.

“The project is a slow go right now,” Grimm said. “We’ve had trouble with permits and deciding where walls will go, and things like that. We’re not going to be moving in with the next year, let’s just say that.”
