Monmouth firefighters battle weekend blaze, cause remains under investigation

Firefighters in Monmouth battled a weekend fire to a house that remains under investigation.

According to a press release from Monmouth Fire Chief Casey Rexroat, firefighters responded to a structure fire at a residence at 817 South 1st Street at 4:59 Sunday morning.

Fire crews found the residence was heavily involved with fire which was also impinging on a neighbor’s garage and got to work using a defensive strategy to protect the garage from igniting.

A call for mutual aid was made and the fire was brought under control quickly, according to Rexroat, but the home was considered a total loss while the garage sustained only minor damage to the siding.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, Monmouth Fire Department, and Monmouth Police Department.

In addition to MFD, the Central Warren Fire Protection District, RSP&E Fire Protection District, and Little York Fire Protection District all assisted with extinguishing the fire. Other agencies that responded for assistance include the Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service, Monmouth Police Department, Woodard Curran, and Ameren Illinois.

No injuries were reported to any firefighters or residents. Crews left the scene at 7:59 a.m.
