After months of discussion, the Galesburg City Council has decided to transform the former Churchill Junior High School into a community center.

Galesburg City Council on Tuesday night can take the next step toward issuing bonds to pay for a community center.

Council members can vote on a resolution in support of selling approximately $5.3 million in general obligation bonds.

There’s also been discussion about issuing bonds to use for city road improvement but Tuesday’s agenda item exclusively mentions a community center.

If Council approves the resolution, then administration would move forward with developing an official statement for the sale of bonds, meeting with a credit rating agency to establish the
City’s credit rating and proceeding with other required steps.

According to Council documents the expectation is that the bond sale could occur and be brought before the Council by March.

Council has had a rigorous debate over the last few months about establishing a community center and how to pay for it.

They already passed a .25 % increase to the home rule sales tax by a 4-3 majority on Dec. 19., but always discussed bonds as an additional way to fund a community center.
