Galesburg Police last Tuesday responded to Galesburg High School for a report of two students fighting which led to an injured staff member. On Monday, January 23rd, a 19-year-old 11th-grade male student and an 18-year-old 12th-grade female student got into a heated exchange for unknown reasons and were separated by school staff. The following day, the female student was following the male student down the hall talking about the exchange the day before. The male student then turned around to address the female student and she struck him twice in the face with a closed fist. The male student then retaliated and the two were in a physical fight in the hallway. A 57-year-old female staff member then attempted to break up the fight and was unintentionally punched in the face. The woman lost her balance and fell – striking her head on some lockers. The female student required a single stitch to a laceration on the inside of her lip. The male student sustained a laceration to one of his retinas. The female staff member was transported to OSF for treatment of head pain and was released. The male student was charged with Battery. The female student was charged with Battery causing bodily harm. Both students were suspended from school and released to their guardians.
