Abingdon is getting a new Dollar General. How it will differ from the existing store remains to be seen.
A media spokesperson from Dollar General confirmed to WGIL via email that the company would soon start construction on a new store at 712 N. Monroe St. in Abingdon. It will first demolish the existing building on the property that originally was a Hardee’s restaurant and recently AT’s Pub & Sport.
DGOG purchased the former Hardee’s for $270,000 on Jan. 20 from The Ghada Company, Inc., according to records obtained from the Knox County Assessor office.
Dollar General currently operates a store at 505 S. Commercial Drive in Abingdon.
A statement from Dollar General says, “At this time, we are currently finalizing our due diligence phase for a new Dollar General in Abingdon, IL that would be located on North Monroe Street. Based on our current timeline, we anticipate to break ground in the coming weeks.”
The Dollar General spokesperson could not confirm how the new location will differ from the current store.
An administrative assistant at Abingdon City Hall said the city has learned the new Dollar General will be a larger store than the current location and is expected to include retail and grocery items.
