Galesburg Police on Saturday afternoon were dispatched to check on a suspicious vehicle that had been ditched in a wooded area at the end of Illinois Avenue. Officers were advised it was an American Val-You GMC Yukon. While en route, police were advised the business owner was reporting a burglary at his residence in the 100 block of Illinois Avenue. Police arrived and observed the SUV up against a tree in a wooded area off Illinois Avenue – no one was inside. Officers noted the back seats of the SUV were down as if the suspect was hauling something. Police then responded to the 48-year-old victim’s residence where forced entry was made to a door and things were strewn about the house. Missing from the residence was a 6-foot by 3-foot gun safe. The safe contained numerous boxes of ammunition and magazines, an AR-15, as well as checkbooks and business credit cards. Police suspect the burglary happened sometime between 1:00pm and 4:00pm on Saturday. The SUV was held for processing. At the time of the report, GPD was in the process of reviewing any potential security footage from the area. The investigation is ongoing.
