Occupant jumps from second story to escape Garfield Avenue house fire

A person jumped from a second story to escape a house fire on Garfield Avenue on Monday afternoon, according to firefighters.

The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 173 Garfield Ave. at 12:06 p.m. Monday. Upon arrival, heavy smoke and fire were showing from the front corner of the two-story structure. The Central Station crew extinguished the fire with an attack line.

According to news release from Chief Randy Hovind, one occupant had escaped by jumping from the second floor onto a deck. No injuries were reported.

Preliminary damage estimates are at $10,000. The second floor sustained heavy smoke and fire damage. Galesburg Fire Department investigators as well as Galesburg Police Department detectives are investigating the cause of the fire.
