Sandburg Trustees approve $16 million contract for new Science and Tech Center, flat tuition rate for third straight year

Carl Sandburg College’s Trustees awarded a nearly $16 million contract for some new construction last week.

The Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting on Thursday, Feb. 23,  where the $15,996,891 contract to River City Construction, who serves as the project’s construction manager, was approved.

The new Science and Technology Center will house the school’s dental hygiene program, nursing programs, and the Math and Natural Sciences Department once it is complete.

This is the first new construction on the main campus since 2006 and the largest project since its initial construction in 1969.

Students attending Carl Sandburg College will not see an increase in their per-credit-hour tuition for the next year.

At the community college’s monthly meeting last week, the Board of Trustees approved a tuition rate of $175 per credit hour for in-district students, $262 per credit hour for out-of-district students, and $292 per credit hour for students from out-of-state.

This is the third year in a row that the board has not raised tuition rates at the school. The in-district tuition rate at Sandburg has gone up just five dollars since the 2019-20 academic year.

In other action, the board of trustees also accepted $126,281 allocated by the Illinois Community College Board of supplemental funding as part of the Mental Health Early Action on Campus Act toward students’ mental health.
