New Galesburg Library to be safe for flying birds

The new Galesburg Public Library will be friendly to flying birds after a donation made from the Friends of the Library.

The Friends of the Library presented the GPL with a $10,000 check to provide bird-safe glass in the new library.

Large windows often are invisible to birds, leading them to fatally collide with the glass.

But this donation will ensure the windows are specially glazed so birds can see them while remaining transparent to human eyes.

Construction on the new library is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2024.

Seven of the large windows are planned to include bird-safe glazing.

The Friends of the Library holds semi-annual book sales to raise funds to benefit the library which also funds things like prizes for the Summer Reading Program and Big Write Competition as well as technology and furnishings.

Book sales however have been put on hold in 2023 until the library moves into its new building.

To sponsor one of the windows or to learn more about how to support the project, call or stop in the library or visit the Galesburg Public Library Foundation website, thegplf.org.
