Ballpark food and more will be available year-round at a new Galesburg walk-up sandwich shop, which just so happens to be located next to a neighborhood ballpark.
Featuring a variety of hot dog options, smash burgers, nachos and more, Double Play opened March 20 at 1315 E. Losey St., just down the right field line at O.N. Custer Park. The restaurant is owned and operated by Jonna Lee, who has worked in the food/restaurant business locally for 20 years.
“I’ve worked for a lot of great restaurants and people, but it’s time for me to have my own thing,” Lee said. “The last five years, I’ve thought a lot about my catering and having a small sandwich shop. When I heard this location was available, it really hit me.
“It’s a great neighborhood with a real community feel. And I played softball there, my husband played baseball there and our children play there. Its just such a good, warm feeling around there.”
Hot dogs, smash burgers are menu favorites
Double Play offers a variety of hot dogs, including the NOLA Dog — one of its most popular and unique menu items. Inspired by Lee’s affection for New Orleans, the NOLA Dog is served with cajun aioli and topped with jambalaya.
Another menu favorite is the T-Lee Heat Smash Burger, served with hot pepper cheese, grilled onion, grill jalapeño, bacon and bacon aioli.
Double Play also offers pulled pork and ribeye sandwiches, a BLT, grilled cheese and a variety of sides.
“I wanted to design the menu around the crowd it would bring,” Lee said. “And I wanted a somewhat healthier approach that wasn’t all fried, and was quick to get out. That’s where the smash burger all started from.
“And who doesn’t love a good hot dog at a ballpark?”
Double Play is currently open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on game nights. It will be open seven days a week during the summer.
“We’re really looking forward to having a good time with the neighbors and the families who come to the park,” Lee said.
