A vacant Galesburg restaurant is slated to be demolished this summer to make room for a new retail development at the corner of Henderson Street and Carl Sandburg Drive.
According to Adam Bell, vice president with Chicago-based Core Acquisitions, projected use options for the former Sirloin Stockade property at 2200 N. Henderson St. include a possible mix of a national sit-down restaurant, fast food, quick service restaurants, auto, medical, financial and general retail.
Bell told WGIL on Wednesday, “We are finalizing our construction drawings this week, and hopefully we’ll have it submitted within two weeks. We would like to get permitted in May, and break ground shortly thereafter.”
Sirloin Stockade first opened in Galesburg in 1991 and closed in late June 2019.
The former buffet restaurant, according to Bell, will be demolished to make room for two new retail buildings — one a multi-tenant building and the other a free standing building.
Does Sandburg Mall have a future? Owner envisions hotel, restaurants, apartments.
Bell says he has tenants secured for Galesburg Commons, but cannot disclose the names or types of businesses until permits are issued for construction.
Core Acquisitions purchased the former Sirloin Stockade property from Rochelle Tennyson for $700,000 on Nov. 19, 2020.
Core Acquisitions has developed numerous shopping centers across the country, including many in Illinois.
The project listing says the corner of Henderson Street and Carl Sandburg Drive it “the best corner location in the market.”
The listing notes, “The Henderson Street retail market is the premier retail corridor in the Galesburg market with strong demographics of over 40,000 residents and over $58,000 in average household income within a ten-mile radius of the property. Galesburg is the largest city in Knox County and offers a 35-mile trade area radius.”
The listing also notes the proposed retail development “is located along the busiest retail corridor in Galesburg, Illinois. Located in the heart of Galesburg’s Henderson Street retail corridor, the property benefits from its close proximity to Interstate-74 and high daily traffic counts on Henderson Street of approximately 19,000 vehicles per day.”
