Shortly before 4:30 in the morning on Tuesday, Galesburg Police responded to the 400 block of North Cherry Street after a neighbor reported a possible burglary in progress. Officers approached the home on foot and could hear movement coming from inside the house. Police then observed a male subject wearing a mask and carrying a book bag get on a bike and attempt to depart. The subject continued to leave as officers commanded him to stop. Officers pursued the suspect as he peddled down the middle of the street and was eventually tackled by police. The suspect was identified as a 36-year-old Galesburg man who has a long history of burglary and trespassing. The same man was arrested in early February after he attempted to steal copper and other items from the shuttered former Broadview Hotel. The man was in possession of reciprocating saw blades, bolt cutters, a pry bar, a hack saw, and other handheld cutters. Officers viewed a neighbor’s security video which showed the man breaking into the home. The man denied attempting to burglarize the home saying he carries the tools with him because he does construction. When police asked him when the last time he worked construction was, he said “Seven years ago.” The man was charged with Burglary, Possession of Burglary Tools, and Resisting a Peace Officer.
