The Knox County Board approved the replacement of the Sheriff’s Department patrol vehicle that was wrecked earlier in the month.

On April 3, WGIL reported that a sheriff’s deputy patrol vehicle had been struck by a motorist while blocking traffic at the scene of a fire.

Wednesday night, the county board approved its replacement, a 2003 Dodge Durango for just over 42-thousand dollars.

There is a large difference between the cost of the vehicle and the insurance payout says Public Safety and Justice Committee Chair Josh Kramer.

“$17,650 that we’re going to get from our insurance company for the vehicle and then there will be an off-set amount that we would pay and on the backside, the insurance company would go after the at-fault driver’s insurance to redeem that amount,” says Kramer.

The money to replace the vehicle will come from the county’s public safety emergency fund.

The replacement vehicle will be fully equipped for street use, minus the radios.
