Man pleads guilty to second-degree murder for Grand Ave. shooting

A Galesburg man pleaded guilty on Monday in Knox County Circuit Court to 2nd-degree murder, yielding him a 15-year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

34-year-old Asheem Monte Afutu fatally shot 33-year-old Gregory Tucker on July 24, 2022, in an empty lot on the 2100 block of Grand Avenue.

Police were notified of the shooting when Tucker was taken to OSF St. Mary Medical Center by private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head.

A warrant was issued for Afutu’s arrest two days later but he wasn’t apprehended until October when he was arrested in Florida and then extradited to Knox County.

In exchange for Afutu’s guilty plea, charges of 1st-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm were dismissed.

Afutu will be given credit for 216 days served toward his 15-year sentence.
