Galesburg City Council chambers at City Hall.
Galesburg City Council took no action in regard to City Manager Gerald’s Smith employment on Monday night.
Council however did convene into executive session to discuss Smith’s job performance.
Council voted 6-0 with one abstention to remove the item from the agenda of a special meeting that was held prior to the regular meeting.
Questions were raised about the legality of the special meeting.
City legal counsel Paul Mangieri confirmed that he believes Monday’s special meeting was legal because three aldermen called for the meeting and they gave 48 hours’ public notice.
Several public comments accused members of the council of being racially motivated in possibly seeking Smith’s dismissal.
Galesburg NAACP President Pam Davidson said her organization would be investigating the removal of Smith and “other issues” related to the city.
Hiring legislative legal counsel
Council also considered legal representation to aid them in legislative matters and represent the Council as a body.
This comes as law firm Barash and Everett are soon to cease acting as City Attorneys, although this new firm could remain and wouldn’t usurp the City Attorney.
Alderman Dwight White was critical that the ordinance wasn’t given to him until Monday’s meeting.
Alderman Bradley Hix withdrew his motion to consider the hiring, allowing council members more time to consider the contract.
