Galesburg man charged with DUI after crashing car while inhaling nitrous; Dunlap woman facing DUI after found asleep behind the wheel

Around 2:30 in the morning on Sunday, Galesburg Police responded to the area of North Seminary and East Fremont Streets for reports of an accident with injuries. A vehicle had left the roadway and struck a concrete barrier in the 900 block of North Seminary Street. Officers made contact with the 33-year-old male driver. The man told police he had not been drinking, but he was inhaling nitrous while he drove which causes him to get drowsy and he passed out, resulting in the crash. Police observed a canister of “Pina Colada” flavored nitrous on the floorboard. The driver sustained minor lacerations to his head. The man was transported to the Public Safety Building where he performed a field sobriety test despite telling officers he was “doing something he shouldn’t have been while driving.” The man was charged with Driving Under the Influence and No Proof of Insurance.

Galesburg Police on Sunday morning were dispatched to the West Main Street Casey’s in reference to a woman passed out behind the wheel. Employees were unsuccessful in trying to wake the woman. Officers were able to wake the woman who had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and was emitting an alcoholic odor. The 22-year-old woman from Dunlap said she had been drinking in Peoria and was dropped off at her car and was waiting for a ride. Casey’s employees said the woman drove the SUV onto the lot and never exited the vehicle. The woman was placed under arrest after a field sobriety test displayed signs of impairment. Numerous open and unopened cans of alcohol were present inside the SUV. The woman provided a breath sample of .129 BAC. She was eventually transported to the Knox County Jail. She was charged with Driving Under the Influence A1, Driving Under the Influence with a BAC of .08 or higher, and Illegal Transportation of Alcohol.
