Galesburg falls in opener of American Legion state baseball tourney. Games continue Thursday

Host Galesburg Post 285 dropped a tough 9-8 decision to Barrington in the opening round of the Illinois American Legion State Baseball Tournament on Wednesday at Knox College.

Galesburg fell behind 3-1 after three innings and trailed 6-1 after four before tying the game with five runs in the top of the fifth. Barrington regained the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth, but Galesburg tied the game with two of its own in the top of the seventh.

Barrington, the home team, scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.

Erza Mason went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in to lead Galesburg, Damien Snell went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI for Post 285 and Carter Allaman went 2-for-3.

“We played hard and battled back a few times,” said Galesburg manager Jeremy Kleine. “This squad doesn’t quit.”

Galesburg (15-13) drops into the loser’s bracket and will play Aviston at noon Thursday.

In other games Wednesday, Danville defeated Rock Island 7-6 and Wheaton defeated Aviston 1-0.

In winner’s bracket games Thursday, Danville takes on Wheaton at 2:30 p.m. and Barrington meets Rock Island at 5 p.m.

The tournament runs through Saturday at Knox College.
