
Perry Serven has been named the 2023 Abingdon-Avon Class of 1967 Scholar. The scholarship, which provides a $1,500 scholarship, is awarded annually to a summa cum laude graduate, a student who has a 4.00 or higher grade point average, and who will be attending a two-year or four-year college or university.
The scholarship is funded by members of the Class of 1967 from Avon and Abingdon high schools, their families and friends, who want to recognize the legacies of their respective schools and to encourage the pursuit of higher education by current and future graduates of Abingdon-Avon High School.
Serven is from St. Augustine and the son of Barbara and David Serven. He was a member of the Abingdon-Avon F.F.A. for four years and also served as chapter treasurer for two years. He was honored with a State Degree, the second highest honor in the F.F.A. organization. It is awarded for the recipient’s supervised agricultural experience and the completion of many significant requirements.
While at A-Town he was on the football team, baseball team and participated in track and field, receiving All-Conference Honorable Mention as Defensive Lineman in 2021. Perry was also Academic All-Conference for Football in 2021 and 2022. He also participated in the Pep Band. Perry was an Illinois State Scholar, and a member of the National Honor Society, serving as vice president his Senior year. He was active in the St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Avondale 4-H, serving as president for two years. He volunteered with the 4-H Giving Thanks Meals and the Abingdon Cemetery Flags for the Fallen. In addition to his academic achievements at A-Town H.S., he also earned Dean’s List designation at Carl Sandburg College.
Serven will be attending Iowa State University where he will be majoring in Biological Systems Engineering with a minor in Genetics.
