Dedication of Deputy Nick Weist Memorial Highway this Saturday

The stretch of Illinois Route 150 will officially bear the name of fallen Knox County Deputy Nick Weist as of this Saturday.

A ceremony will be held at AlWood Elementary School in Alpha at 11:45 a.m.

Those interested in attending the dedication are advised to bring a lawn chair.

Weist was killed while trying to lay down spike strips to stop a fleeing suspect with a gun on April 29, 2022 when the fleeing car hit him.

The route where this occurred will be named after him; U.S. Route 150 from Galesburg’s Main Street to the intersection of U.S. Route 150 and Illinois Route 17 in Alpha.

Chief sponsors of the bill to name this highway after Weist include Senators Neil Anderson, Jil Tracy and Mike Halpin and Rep. Dan Swanson.

Swanson says that he plans to be among the community officials in attendance.

Swanson said in support of the bill, “We name things after heroes in this nation, and there’s no greater hero than Nick Weist, who died protecting his fellow citizens.”
