Former Hill inmate sentenced for assaulting correctional officer

A former inmate of Hill Correctional Center was sentenced to twelve years on Wednesday for assaulting a correctional officer.

William Brown was found guilty at a bench trial by Knox County Circuit Judge Andrew Doyle on June 26th.

The prosecution presented evidence that Brown assaulted a female correctional officer while she was performing her duties in June of 2022.

Brown forcefully grabbed her causing her to be thrown to the ground.

Fortunately, another inmate intervened, positioning himself between Brown and the officer, allowing her to exit the housing wing and seek assistance.

Brown was found guilty of aggravated battery which typically carries a sentencing range of 3 to 7 years. However, Judge Doyle was able to consider two prior convictions for Brown for assaulting prison staff.

Also after the victim read an impact statement, Judge Doyle determined Brown was eligible for an extended term.

Doyle could have sentenced Brown to up to 14 years but handed him a sentence of 12 years.

The prosecution was led by Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin.
