Galesburg Police on Sunday responded to the 500 block of Clark Street for a report of theft after a 79-year-old man told police his 72-year-old sister-in-law entered his home and stole over $35,000 in cash that was located under his mattress. The man showed Galesburg Police security footage of the woman arriving at his residence and entering the house empty-handed. Moments later, the woman can be seen walking out carrying a box containing the cash. The man said his back door was unlocked and that’s how his sister-in-law entered.
On Tuesday, the female suspect turned herself into Galesburg Police. The woman, along with her sister believed the money inside the box belonged to them, and admitted to taking it – because the victim wouldn’t be able to prove how much money was inside.
The woman also said she was fine with going to jail over it. Galesburg Police took possession of the box and it was turned over to the Knox County State’s Attorney.
The woman was transported to the Knox County Jail and charged with Residential Burglary and Theft Over $10,000.
