Galesburg hires new leaders; interim city manager and director of public works

City Hall

Galesburg City Council chambers at City Hall.

The City of Galesburg made some headway toward getting leadership into place Tuesday night, including hiring an interim city manager. Former Police Chief John Schlaf was officially hired as interim city manager for Galesburg on Monday night.

The vote was 6 yes and an abstention from Dwight White.

Schlaf will start Wednesday which will allow for 3 days of overlap with the current interim Wayne Carl.

Meanwhile, Carl announced the hiring of Michael Doi as the Director of Public Works.

At the same time, it was the first meeting with the city’s newly hired attorney, James Kelly law firm.

Council also had on first reading an ordinance to change public comments to near the end of meetings instead of the beginning.

Ward 3 Alderman Evan Miller requested the ordinance, after in June suggesting the change to have public comments early in the meeting.

Miller says part of why he now wants public comment at the end of meeting is because of a time when a representative of Graham Medical Center sat through nearly 4 hours of meeting because of extensive public comment.

He added that potential business leaders and developers that come to town could be deterred by such meetings.
