A WGIL listener/reader recently asked: What is happening, and what is the future for the site of the former Broadview on the Public square?
For the answer, we turned to Steve Gugliotta, Director of Community Development, who provided the following timeline and status update:
- An order for demolition was obtained by the City of Galesburg on Dec. 1, 2022, for the former Broadview Hotel, located at 29 Public Square.
- On Feb. 6, 2023, the Galesburg City Council approved a bid from Jimax Demolition Corporation of $406,470.23 to demolish the former Broadview Inn & Suites and accompanying restaurant.
- Demolition started in April 2023
- The final site work for the demolition is underway. Last week, the contractor removed concrete chunks left behind and laid down some new clean dirt. Another contractor will be placing grass seed and once that is complete, the City will inspect it again. If everything is successfully completed at that point, then the demolition will be complete.

Gugliotta said: What will be done with the property is yet to be determined. The City will likely seek ownership through the court system, and evaluate options to bring the property back into productive use. There is possible environmental contamination on a small portion of the lot due to a previous gas station on the site approximately 90 years ago. This will need to be remediated and could take some time to do so; however, this will not be known until after ownership is obtained and field testing is conducted.
