A WGIL listener/reader recently asked: The gazebo in Standish Park has been demolished. What is the reason, and will it be replaced?

For the answer, we turned to Elizabeth Varner, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Galesburg, who provided the status update:

How old was the gazebo?

The Standish Park Gazebo had been there since 1995.

Why was it demolished?

Recently, a concern was brought to the attention of city staff that the Standish Park Gazebo should be looked at for safety reasons, due to structural concerns.

Wednesday, Oct. 25, staff had an on-site visit to make a determination on the status of the structure.  (This meeting included the Director of Community Development, Director of Parks and Recreation, Code Compliance Supervisor, Superintendent of Parks, City Inspector, and an Architect.) The meeting resulted in the decision that the Standish Park Gazebo should be demolished for safety purposes. Staff moved forward with demolition this past week.

The safety of all park guests is the number one priority, and staff determined this was the best decision.

Will there be a new gazebo in Standish Park?

Standish Park is a beautiful park in Galesburg that many people enjoy. The plan is to add concrete to the area and budget for a new structure in the future.
