Murder charges reinstated in Maquon storage locker case

The Knox County State’s Attorney’s office’s prosecution of Marcy Oglesby on murder charges will continue after a state appellate court reversed the circuit judge’s dismissal of the case on Tuesday.

Oglesby is accused of murdering and concealing the death of former Maquon Police Chief Richard Young by placing him in a storage locker.

Oglesby now again faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated battery.

9th Circuit Judge Andrew Doyle dismissed murder charges in March because the state violated Oglesby’s constitutional right to a speedy trial, filing new charges after a 120-day limit allowed by Illinois law.

The 4th District Appellate Court ruled that because the concealment of a non-homicidal death and murder charges were not part of the same act they weren’t required to be filed at the same time.

A pre-trial hearing for Oglesby has been set for January 8th in front of Judge Doyle.

Prosecutors allege that Oglesby and Young were in a relationship for years before she began poisoning him through food and drink, with over-the-counter medications and eye drops.

Young’s body was found in a Maquon storage locker in October 2022 but it would be months before his remains were officially identified.

Oglesby told police she didn’t alert authorities to Young’s death for several reasons including she wanted to fulfill his final wish to be buried on a Native American mound.
