A pair of Galesburg High School wrestlers won two matches to advance to the semifinals of the IHSA Class 2A State Wrestling Championships at State Farm Center in Champaign.
At 132 pounds, defending state champion Galesburg senior Gauge Shipp remained undefeated on the season with two wins Thursday. Shipp won his first-round match by tech fall over Brody Smith of Triad before winning by major decision 13-2 over Olin Walker of Chicago St. Patrick in the quarterfinals.
At 120 pounds, Almendarez won an 8-1 decison over Isaac Mayora of Lombard Montini in the first round before taking a 3-1 decision over Bradley Ruckman of Bethalto Civic Memorial in the quarterfinals.
Shipp is 43-0 and Almendarez is 41-1.
