A dairy company says it’s changing the face of an ‘underserved category’ with lactose-free milk

An Illinois-based dairy says there’s a growing need for lactose-free dairy options, so it’s making four new ones.

Prairie Farms Dairy says it will soft launch this month a line of four new lactose-free products in the Saint Louis metro area, moving to other areas in June.

They’re calling it the “Gold Standard” — lactose-free whole and two percent milk in gallons, and 16-ounce tubs of cottage cheese and sour cream.

Prairie Farms CEO Matt McClelland says in a news release they’re not, in his words, “tapping into a trend” — rather, making lactose-free products “normal.”

“As one of America’s most successful farmer-owned dairy cooperatives, we’re committed to meeting the needs of all consumers, and what I’d like to say to those who have left the category due to lactose sensitivity is, ‘The
wait is over. Bring on the Prairie Farms milk,'” said McClelland, in the news release.

The company says it will be the first to offer gallon-size lactose-free milk, and McClellan says he hopes it will bring people back to the company’s brands. He says he believes it tastes the same as regular milk.

Prairie Farms Dairy is based in Edwardsville, making milk through 600 farm families, it says, through 47 plants.
