The Galesburg Public Library says it will mark its 150th birthday by opening the new library building next week.
The library says in a statement more than two years and $22 million later, the new library on West Main will open Wednesday, April 24, at 9am.
The new library will be open 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; and 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, though Mayor Peter Schwartzman recently suggested at an event with U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen he’d like to see the library open on Sundays
It’s a 60,000 square foot building with “five study rooms, a children’s library, a teen zone, a community room, a fireplace alcove, an art exhibit wall, and a reading balcony,” according to a library news release.
It was mostly paid for with a state library grant, along with $4 million raised in the community.
