Kenneth Nelson Nyman, 75, of Galesburg, IL, slipped off to heaven peacefully on May 22, 2024. He was given his heart’s desire, which was to stay in his home until the end. Born on February 21, 1949, Ken was the second son in a family of two boys. After high school in Galesburg, he began college at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, and finished with a degree in accounting from the University of Illinois in Champaign.
After graduation, Ken joined the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, where he was being schooled in the Vietnamese language. But two years later, before going overseas, he received his honorable discharge. Back in Galesburg, Ken took a job with the United States Post Office, where he worked until his retirement. During that time, he also cared faithfully for his ailing mother in their home, for 18 years, before she passed away.
Family members preceding Ken in death were his father and mother (Willard and Lois Nyman), his brother (Nathan Nyman) and his nephew (Nelson Nyman). Surviving loved ones include his sister-in-law (Margaret Nyman), six nieces and nephews, and 18 great-nieces and great-nephews, along with many cousins. He was a loving uncle who never missed anybody’s birthday, sending personalized cards to each one, along with some birthday money tucked inside.
Ken had been battling cancer (along with several other major health issues) for about a year, but faced the end of his earthly life with strong courage and complete acceptance. He will be greatly missed, but we know we’ll be together with him again one day. “In your presence, Lord, there is fullness of joy.” Psalm 16:11
Cremation will be accorded. Private burial will take place at a later date at Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Galesburg. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com.
