Area cities to share in federal grant money for infrastructure projects. Here’s who’s getting it in our area

Four communities in the area are each getting close to $1.5 million for potential upgrades and work to their water and sewer systems.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity says Abingdon, Bushnell, Canton, and Toulon are among 32 communities in the state that will be getting money through federal Community Development Block Grants.

In this case, the state says the grants are specifically for public infrastructure — including water and sewer line replacement, building storage tanks and other things.

“The CDBG Grant Program plays an essential role in ensuring families across Illinois have access to high-quality sewer and water infrastructure that improves their quality of life,” said Kristin Richards, Director, DCEO, in a news release. “This funding will support the critical repairs provided through the CDBG grant program and have a long-lasting impact on our communities that need it most.”

The state says preference was given to projects for so-called “underserved areas,” among others.

State officials say the money will help improve quality of life in those areas.

In this area, here’s what communities have been awarded money:

  • City of Abingdon:  $1,500,000
  • City of Bushnell:  $1,499,999
  • City of Canton:  $1.499,957
  • City of Toulon:  $1,385,000

The state claims the average grant award was close to $1.2 million.
