A man who was found guilty in Henry County earlier this year of murdering Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicholas Weist in 2022 will have his sentencing delayed while he undergoes a neurophysiology exam.
Daylon Richardson, 24, of Granite City, was in court Monday where Judge Norma Kauzlarich ordered the evaluation.
Richardson had been scheduled for sentencing in August.
The next court date for Richardson is September 16 when the judge will review the evaluation before hearing Richardson’s objection to a sentence of natural life in prison.
Richardson’s Attorney Bruce Carmen argues that the statute that imposes a sentence of natural life is a disproportionate penalty in part due to Richardson’s age, and alleged mental delay.
Jurors in Henry County found Richardson guilty of murder in the death of Weist on Feb. 29 after three hours of deliberation.
