They’ve apparently changed their minds.
Monmouth City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher confirms that West Des Moines, Iowa-based HyVee will not be opening a store after all in the Maple City.
Steinbrecher says the company plans on using a real estate agent to sell the former Shopko property in Monmouth, which they purchased four years ago.
Just last year, Tri States Public Radio reported HyVee was still committed to opening a store in Monmouth. Since then, some of their other stores have closed, most notably in the Quad Cities.
Steinbrecher says HyVee intends on selling the property for $1.8 million, and he doesn’t yet know what agent they will go with for selling, but it won’t be done in house.
HyVee officials did not return our calls for comment Tuesday.
