A man who is from Fulton County and who reportedly went to school there is dead after a military helicopter crashed last week in Alabama.
The Dale County, Alabama Coroner identified the victim as Daniel Munger, 46. Munger’s Facebook page says he is from Dunfermline, and went to high school in Lewistown.
Officials say an AH-64 Apache helicopter was on a training exercise August 7 when it crashed on the Fort Novosel Army Base, almost 100 miles south of Montgomery Alabama. The U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence at Fort Novosel is the primary training facility for helicopter pilots.
A student pilot also on board was taken to a hospital for further evaluation.
The coroner said Munger was retired from the Army and working as a contractor.
Details about the crash itself have not been released, except that authorities say it’s under investigation.
“Our primary concern is the welfare and health of the student pilot and care and concern for the family of the deceased,” Maj. Gen. Clair A. Gill, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel commanding general, said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.
