A Galesburg woman who pleaded guilty to murdering her young daughter has won a second hearing appealing her sentence.

Hazel Ivy, 33, was sentenced in September 2022 in Knox County Court to 53 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

But a July opinion from the Fourth District Appellate Court reversed the Circuit Court’s denial of a motion to reconsider her sentence.

Ivy pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the charge of murder in 2022.

The new hearing on the motion to reconsider Ivy’s sentence is set for Dec. 11 before Judge Andrew Doyle.

Court testimony detailed that the child suffered multiple stab wounds, blunt force trauma to the back of her head in addition to injuries consistent with strangulation.

Knox County State’s Attorney Jeremy Karlin originally aimed for a natural life sentence for Ivy, but in exchange for the plea, the state agreed to recommend a sentence of 20 to 53 years in prison.

At a sentencing hearing in September 2022, the state argued for a sentence of 53 years and Ivy’s public defenders argued for a sentence of 20 years.
