As a two-part pavement preservation project continues on Illinois 41 between Galesburg and Abingdon, those who travel the busy highway continue to wonder what the final product will look like.
One follower of our Facebook page asked: WGIL what is going on Rt. 41? They are chip and oiling it. Why no black top on a State Highway?
WGIL reached Wednesday out to Paul Wappel, public information officer for the Illinois Department of Transportation, who responded:
“The pavement preservation project on IL 41 is a two-part process. The contractor is currently working on the first process, which is prime, aggregate, and prime (oil and chip with a fog seal). The second process will be to overlay the oil and chip with a micro seal, which is an aggregate and oil slurry that is approximately ½ inch in thickness. The contractor is planning on completing the oil and chip this week and the micro seal by the end of next week, weather depending.”
WGIL will continue to monitor and provide updates on the project.
